Research undertaken at Oklahoma State University in which 62 people were randomly chosen and assigned to sleep in a variety of new beds for 28 days revealed that ”almost everyone started to sleep better. This was regardless of which model of mattress they were given, though people who slept in the cheapest beds did report more severe lower-back pain than those in the medium to higher-priced beds.”

The most important thing that the research revealed though was the fact that the mattresses were new! They noted that ‘’the average age of the participant’s old beds was 9.5 years and they concluded that sleep quality may be dependent on timely replacement of bedding systems.”
It’s pretty obvious then that if you’ve been sleeping on the same mattress for more than 5 to 10 years (or more), it’s definitely time to get a new one. The sagging foundation of an old mattress can cause irreparable damage and loss of sleep and the build-up of allergens from dust mites can be significant, so for health reasons if nothing else, buy at least a medium-priced mattress within a reasonable space of time.
Having decided to buy a new mattress, the most important thing to do, just as you do when you buy a car, is to go and give it a good test drive.
Take it for a test
Taking a mattress for a test drive is vitally important because we are all different. Some will prefer firmer mattresses and some will not. Some, who may be experiencing back problems, for example, may not be comfortable with the same mattress as one who does not.
