What makes a mattress a ‘luxury’ mattress

Many people have the wrong idea about what makes a mattress a luxury mattress. They have the idea that it is a very fancy-looking high-end product that just feels like one is sleeping on a cloud – but if you believe that is all a luxury mattress needs to be, then you have your head in the clouds!

A luxury mattress essentially needs to be a high-quality mattress encompassing the three main areas of support, comfort and durability – but luxury doesn’t necessarily mean so expensive that it is out of the reach of the average person. Affordability is a factor too.

So, let’s examine what makes a mattress a luxury mattress…

Support

Every mattress has the primary function of ensuring that we sleep well. We spend a huge chunk of our lives there, but mostly so that we can sleep and wake up feeling well rested. Support is essential therefore and as one expert puts it, “A good mattress should provide adequate support to maintain proper spinal alignment, preventing back pain and discomfort.’’

So, this comes from a mattress being of the right firmness to fully support people of all shapes and sizes. We have written articles on this so check it out – Mattress Firmness Guide for What’s Best for You – Truform. Essentially firmness should align with body weight, sleeping preferences and positions, but it’s all in the article.

Finally, ensure the mattress also has a firm edge which prevents sagging so the whole mattress can be used.

Comfort

Comfort in a mattress is mostly about relieving pressure points in the body like the shoulders, hips and area in the neck and back. It comes from the materials used which is why there is a fairly large range of mattress types like foam, pocketed coils, or hybrid combinations, but do be careful of compromising solid support just to feel great because the mattress is soft. You always need to find the right balance of comfort and support.

Also, if you share a bed look for motion isolation if possible so that you both sleep well even if you sleep very differently.

Durability

A good mattress that will last a long time is well constructed utilising the right materials which are durable and generally backed by Bureaus of Standards and of course, a full manufacturer’s warranty which also ensures the mattress is free from harmful chemicals and materials.

Truform mattresses for example have SABS-approved parts, the highest gauge wire and highest spring count in every mattress and an additional comfort layer under the quilting that makes their mattresses firmer, more comfortable and orthopedically superior.

The Truform difference
