A good mattress can alleviate Restless Leg Syndrome and Snoring!

We are currently looking at some of the most common and severe sleeping disorders and how sleeping on a good mattress, (together with a few other things) can make a difference and offer better sleep to sufferers of these issues.

Our last article covered insomnia and sleep apnea and in this article, we talk about how a good mattress can alleviate Restless Leg Syndrome and Snoring!

These are two very different afflictions so let’s look at them and see what we can do to get some respite and better sleep.

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Sometimes when trying to sleep – or even when just sitting we can experience tingling, numbness, or painful sensations in our legs. If it is severe it is known as Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS.

According to research, RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a sleep and movement disorder affecting both physical and psychological processes and there is no cure for it. Unfortunately, it’s a permanent condition requiring management and proactive treatment.

What can we do?

A few suggestions to offer support to those with RLS are…

  • Pillows and massage for improved circulation – placing a pillow between (or below) the legs can improve your blood circulation which helps to calm the restless feelings. Also, regular massaging by a professional does the same thing and stimulates blood flow, thereby releasing muscle tension.
  • Choose the right mattress – Does your mattress relieve the body’s pressure points? Getting a good hybrid mattress will not only support the body well but soothe tension in the muscles and nerves, without putting extra pressure on the hips, spine and shoulders, thereby assisting those with RLS.

Solving the snoring issue

Snoring, as we all know, can be a complex and difficult-to-solve issue. Many have written about it and extensive research has been done. Some people find a cure, and some suffer with it all their lives, but did you know that a good mattress can make some difference and potentially offer snorers some relief?

The surface you sleep on, and your pillows can affect snoring, based on the angle of your neck and the efficiency of your airways. A good mattress supports your spine, and this can help to keep the right alignment between your head and neck, thereby alleviating snoring.

Additionally, research has shown that ‘’A mattress made of hypoallergenic materials may help deter dust mites and prevent mould and mildew, which can all trigger snoring.’’
