It’s hard to believe that the mattresses we sleep on today started as makeshift, very uncomfortable straw beds! Yes, it’s true, so we thought it would be fun to take a look at where we came from with mattresses, to where we are now and maybe a peek into the future. So, this is all about mattresses – from way back to the future!
A blast from the past
Back in ancient times, bedding began in a primitive form of stuffing straw or hay into sackcloth or animal skins. Needless to say, this was not very comfortable and offered little support but it was deemed to be better than sleeping on the ground.
The next phase, according to historians, was in the Middle Ages when ‘’feathers, down, and wool were popular choices, and mattresses were often filled with these materials.’’ The problem with this was that, although providing some more added comfort, there was still little support.
It was only in the 19th century that a real breakthrough was made, with the invention of far more durable and supportive coil springs. This revolutionised the mattress industry. Patented in the US in 1865, the coil spring mattress quickly became the popular choice for the rich as it provided far healthier and more comfortable sleep.
Today technology rules
In today’s age of technological advances, many forms of mattresses have been invented including advanced versions of the spring mattresses of the past and, of course, foam mattresses, to name just two of the most popular.
As one of the most sought-after and popular brands of mattresses in South Africa, Truform Bedding manufactures mattresses that have all the ingredients of a good 21st-century mattress. These are high-quality springs, the highest gauge wire and spring count in every mattress and an additional comfort layer under the quilting that makes their mattresses firmer, more comfortable and orthopedically superior.
As just one typical example of a good mattress company in today’s market, Truform offers a product range that consists of the highest quality innerspring mattresses, base sets, and affordable foam mattresses, all manufactured in-house.
…and what of the future?
‘’The future of mattress technology’’, according to one observer,’’ is bright, with continuous innovations aimed at improving sleep quality and overall health. From smart mattresses with eco-friendly materials to customisable sleep solutions with advanced temperature regulation – the possibilities are endless. Smart beds are designed to improve sleep quality. They can track the sleeper’s sleep patterns and make adjustments to the bed’s firmness and support to promote better sleep.’’
