Many myths have emerged about mattresses over time, but there have been significant changes and advancements to mattresses in recent years. Much of what we believe about mattresses may have been true in years gone by, but if we look at the great mattresses being produced now, we will find that these beliefs are simply no longer true, and this article gives you a few examples of this. So, here are 5 mattress myths debunked – and what you really need to know!
- All mattresses are the same! – Even mattresses that look alike and are made of the same material are not necessarily the same. Mattresses today have different design elements and levels of firmness to support different preferences, postural needs and differing weights.
Even your age and possible sleeping disorders can play a role in the type of mattress you might choose, and the firmness of the mattress will also determine the type of sleep you get. So, mattresses are definitely not the same, and you should test a few to get the one that suits you!
- You only need to replace an old and sagging mattress – This is another myth and could be a dangerous one. The average good mattress needs to be replaced every 8 years, so waiting until a mattress is sagging and the springs or foam no longer offer proper support can do untold damage to your body and cost you many hours of precious sleep.
- The mattress is as good as its cost. – Also, not true as marketing has created the impression that very expensive mattresses offer better quality. The Truform brand, for example, has shown that everything you need in a high-quality mattress is available at a very competitive price.
- Firmer mattresses are best for good back support – This is a very old and scientifically unsupported myth. According to research, we all have a spine with a natural curve and finding the mattress that will properly support this natural curve is the most important aspect of finding a mattress aimed to aid your spine.
In essence, it means that if the mattress properly supports your spine’s natural curve, it will alleviate back – or other spinal pain as it will produce the least amount of pressure on the problematic area.
- You need to regularly flip your mattress – This may be true of some mattresses, especially if it is quite an old one (in which case it probably needs replacing anyway), but many modern mattresses are designed to be one sided and should not be flipped to keep them in good shape – in fact they should not be flipped at all. To keep them in good condition simply rotate them every 3 to 5 weeks.
